Matthew Collums
Human, 39, Male
Chief Medical Officer, U.S.S. Denmark
Appearance:
5'11", a bit rotund, but not out of shape. Brown hair and eyes. Face a bit round, with deep-set eyes and a piercing glare when he's fed up, and a tendency to have a smirk on his lips when he's not. Hands are agile, light, despite his size, and quite dexterous, allowing him to manipulate small medical instruments with great skill.
A scientist at heart, he tends to shun the uniform in preference for loose and comfortable civilian clothing and a lab coat, and thus tends to look a little sloppy, despite having his hair neatly combed and face clean-shaven virtually all the time. Needless to say, this doesn't endear him to the more military minded commanders, so he's been trying to wear the "uniform" at least sometimes.
Personality:
Tends to have a casual attitude about authority. Affable when needed, but with a slight hint of 'I have other things I'd rather be doing' in social situations. However, when it comes to his work, he's quite capable of having an excellent bedside manner, visiting with patients as much as he can spare.
Brusque best describes him when he's busy, as he is quite often with various projects and medical experiments he has around. As he focuses in on the task at hand, it's not uncommon for him to tune out everything around him short of explosions and completely zero in on what he's doing.
While he uses modern medical equipment constantly, he has a real desire to personally witness the things he works on, and thus tends to use traditional medical and scientific equipment, such as optical microscopes, test tubes, chemicals and other such equipment that would seem quaint, claiming that only when you see with your own eyes what that virus/bacteria/etc does can you truly understand it and thus combat it to the greatest effect. While this causes eye-rolls amongst other medical professionals, his performance on the job is rated as above par.
An early affectation with classic weaponry and target shooting has resulted in a (mostly in storage) vintage pistol collection, although he carries a few with him to his assignments to tinker with and repair when he has spare time. It's rumored that some of the weapons have a family history to them, and although he doesn't mention it much, he does seem to cherish his collection beyond that of a garden-variety collector, nearly to obsession at times.
History:
Born Oklahoma City, OK Jan 23, 2336, lived in Oklahoma most of his early life. His parents were relative unknowns, one a transport maintenance technician for civilian fleets, the other a historian and collector.
In August 2354, Matthew began attending University of Lexington for general studies, transferring to Kentucky University Medical School in January 2358 to complete his Ph.D.
May 2362 hired by the United Federation of Planets as a civilian consulting researcher for Starfleet Medical focusing on alien anatomical studies. Despite his research responsibilities, he was frequently used to relieve other doctors in the Emergency Room and often ended up as a relief doctor for the starbase when things got hairy.
October 2364 - At the behest of his superiors, he joined Starfleet and began Academy training, in hopes of garnering more interesting assignments at Starfleet Medical.
2364-2368 - Starfleet Academy, graduated with top marks in every subject except fleet tactics and warp theory.
In 2371, he was assigned to the USS Equinox and was en route to the vessel when it disappeared. New orders arrived for him to instead join the USS Nova which would be covering the mission in place of the Equinox.
During his time on the Nova, Matthew was involved in the acquisition of unique samples of various mutagenic virii developed by the Cardassian government as terror weapons, never intended for actual deployment in combat. With these samples, he returned to Starfleet Medical to develop counters to these, then other more routine illnesses that captured Cardassians were bringing with them during the Dominion war.
Finally, as the end of the war approached, and Cardassia became allied with the Federation in the driving out of Dominion forces, Matthew was assigned the daunting task of helping to heal the Cardassian civilian population as a relief medical worker. The atrocities he saw there would stick with him for a very long time.
Service Record:
2368-2371 - Starfleet Medical, Medical Doctor/Researcher, Ensign/Lieutenant JG
2371-2373 - USS Nova, Medical Researcher/Medical Officer, Lieutenant JG
2373-2375 - Starfleet Medical, Alien Pathogen Researcher, Lieutenant
2375 - USS Nobel, Emergency Medical Response Team for Cardassia Prime, Lieutenant
2375 - USS Denmark, Chief Medical Officer, Lieutenant
